Hoge (High) and Lage (Low) der A:

Back in the days the locals (Stadjers) didn't had time to wait until the water was the right height. That's why they built a high quay, called the Hoge der A, where loading and unloading took place during high tide. On the other side of the deep, the Lage der A , a low quay was built for loading and unloading during low tide. That is the reason why trade was done uninterrupted from and to the harbour of Groningen. There is hardly any trade of the kind done here today but it is still one of the liveliest places of the city with its cafés and bars.

Warehouses:

Search here for the address Hoge der A number 5. Here you will find a national monument. This is the former three-floor high pakhuis (warehouse) with the name Libau containing. Interesting to see is that every floor is equipped with a hatch lifting system. Also notice there is another three-storey house on the top façade (extended hood above a lifting beam) present.

Red light district:

When you cross the street at the end of the Hoge der A, you walk into the street called "Vishoek". Back in the day this area was a Red Light district and you saw many prostitutes sitting behind the windows in this area. This former red light district consisted of three streets. These were the Hoek- and Muurstraat and the Vishoek. On December 31, 2015, the municipality decided to put an end to this red lights due to continious drug-related nuisance. Once at Vishoek, you should be able to see an artwork, which has been placed there in order to pay tribute to the women (the prostitutes) who had impacted the image of A-Kwartier for years. This artwork, created by artist Anne Wenzel, is a female bust on a column of honour. A column of honor is placed in memory of an important event or person and is intended to make an impression. The monument stands for woman as human being, with all her beauty, strength and vulnerability.

Did you know that....

there are a lot of well-known Dutch people come from Groningen?

Take Arjen Robben for example who was born in Bedum (a small village next to the city), who started his football career at FC Groningen. Or TV presenter Arjan Lubach who started his career at Oog Radio in Groningen. And last but not least the comedian Bert Visscher who was also born in the city.

But there are also a number of Groninger people with a beautiful voice. For the young people among our walkers, you probably may know him. Our Kraantje Pappie (Little Craney) lives in the center of Groningen. And who remembers Imca Marina? She was born in our province! Listen to their songs below.
