Hidden church:
Curious about a hidden church in the Oude Boteringestraat?
The Baptist Church in Groningen is located in a side alley of the Oude Boteringestraat. Originally a wooden sheltered church, which was hidden behind a house, stood on this spot. The current church building was built after the Mennonites had been granted full equal rights during the French period. The church was consecrated on October 29, 1815. The building was expanded in the mid-nineteenth century. After the house in front it was demolished, the church became visible looking from the Oude Boteringestraat. This location is a good representation of the past characteristics of a clandestine church. Â
Number 44:

Butjesstraat:
Did you know that the local word 'butje' has its origins in this street? If we want to compare the word butje neatly, then it corresponds to the word crazy. In the Butjesstraat once stood a house which was used for children with disabilities and they would often be referred as BUTJES. It's definitely not neat but sometimes this word is still used by locals as a swear word.
Prinsentuin (Prince's Garden):
Because the Prinsentuin is completely walled, and in its centre you are bound to be engulfed by an oasis of peace, which is a gift for many. In this Renaissance garden you walk through boxwood hedges, countless rose beds, herb garden and deciduous corridors. Here you see the golden sun with a rod attached to it, the shadow of which indicates the time. The tangle of lines contain different meanings. Prinsentuin was built in 1626 for the Princes of Nassau, who had the adjacent Prinsenhof as their local residence.  Did you know that the Royal Family recently spent a night here? Curious when that happened?
