Card 5

Hoge (High) and Lage (Low) der A:

This location used to be the oldest harbor quarter of the city and was directly connected to the sea for a long time. The enterprising people of Groningen didn't have time to wait for the water to reach the right level. That's why they built a high quay called the "Hoge der A" for loading and unloading during high tide. On the other side of the canal, the "Lage der A," a low quay was built for loading and unloading during low tide. This allowed trade from the Groningen harbor to continue uninterrupted. Trade has largely stopped here now, but with its cafes and bars, it remains one of the liveliest places in the city. It is also the most photographed location in the city.

Warehouses:

As you walk along the picturesque street of Hoge der A, you will pass by many national monuments and old warehouses located along the canal. These warehouses reveal the bustling activity that took place here in the past, with ships coming and going. An example of such a national monument is Hoge der A number 5. Here, you will find the former three-story Warehouse Libau. It's interesting to see that there is still a "trijshuisje" (hoist house) on the gable. This is an extended roof structure above a hoist beam. In the past, goods could be transported up and down using the hoist beam.

Did you know that....

Did you know that many famous Dutch people come from Groningen?

Take Arjen Robben, for example, who is originally from Bedum and began his football career at FC Groningen. Presenter Arjan Lubach started his career at Oog Radio in Groningen. Comedian Bert Visscher is also from the city.

But there are also some Groningers with a golden voice. For the younger walkers among you, you probably know him well. Our Kraantje Pappie (Little Craney) lives in the city center of Groningen. And who can forget Imca Marina? She was born in our province! Listen to their songs below.
